Kiln dried firewood logs - Finglas Fuels

Which firewood type is recommended for use.

Check which firewood has a high calorific value and smells good when burning. During the heating season, 5 to 10 cubic meters of wood is used as fuel for the fireplace, depending on the size of the heated rooms, frequency of burning, and the weather. This is a lot, so when buying wood for a fireplace, consider the choice of species, place of purchase, and storage.

Why does firewood need to be seasoned?

In the wood right after the tree is felled, there is 50 to 70 percent water. It depends on the type of plant and the season (trees felled in winter have less of it). Such wood has a low calorific value – it burns poorly, gives little heat, smokeless, and the flue gases with a high water vapor content easily settle on the walls of the fireplace and in the chimney flues, reducing their service life. Heat losses are also higher because to be able to burn damp wood, you need to increase the air draft, which means an open damper.

Therefore, before use, firewood should be seasoned, i.e. left for some time to dry. For this purpose, it is best to split them on the logs. Prepared in this way, they dry faster and are immediately ready for use. By storing them under the roof for at least a year, better two years. During this time, its humidity drops to 15 to 20 percent. The calorific value of such wood is about 4 kWh per kg, while a fireplace wood with a water content of 50 to 60 percent is only about 2 kWh per kg.

The logs should not lie directly on the ground so that they do not absorb moisture. This is especially true for air-dried wood also called kiln dried firewood. Better to put them on the joists or the grate. This will ensure their insulation from the ground and good air circulation. Damp wood should not be stored in unventilated rooms, because it may infect and mold.

Bulk bags of logs commonly called “a ton of logs” or “a tonne of logs”compare to barrow bags is up to 4 times bigger not only because of its physical dimensions but also about the number of logs it contains.

IMPORTANT! - NEVER BURN THIS TYPE OF FIREWOOD FOR SALE IN Kildare!

IMPORTANT! Wooden elements that have been impregnated, varnished, or painted with any other chemical preparation are not suitable for burning in fireplaces. In order to obtain the highest calorific value of wood, it should be seasoned for one to two years. Immediately after cutting, the wood has 50 to 70 percent of water in it, and after seasoning, its moisture content drops to 15-20 percent. Wood with a high water content gives little heat, burns poorly, and smokes poorly.
